New Zealand is considering charging visitors in five of its most iconic tourist sites. The government aims to conserve these destinations, which draw 2.6 million people annually, by introducing access fees for both locals and international travelers.

According to Conservation Minister Tama Potaka, this marks the biggest potential change in conservation policy in over 30 years. The proposal suggests charging $20 for New Zealanders and $30 for foreigners to visit Cathedral Cove, Tongariro Alpine Crossing, Franz Josef Glacier, Milford Sound, and Aoraki Mount Cook National Park.

The fees could generate around $71 million yearly if applied to all visitors, or about half that if restricted to international tourists. The revenue would support the maintenance of these popular spots, many of which are under increasing pressure . New Zealand’s ecosystems are in decline, with nearly 4,000 native species at risk of extinction, a government report highlights.

Charging access fees is not unprecedented. Countries like the US, UK, Japan, and Australia already use this system to manage visitor numbers and fund conservation. New Zealand is also exploring updates to its conservation land management practices.

However, the proposal has sparked debate. Conservation group Forest and Bird argues that connecting with nature should not depend on financial means. “Access to te Taiao (the natural world) is a fundamental part of being a New Zealander,” the group said.

While Minister Potaka acknowledges this sentiment, he suggests many New Zealanders might accept fees for the sake of preserving these treasured landscapes . Public feedback will shape the final decision.

As discussions unfold, New Zealand balances conservation efforts with ensuring its natural wonders remain accessible for generations to come.
