According to Conservation Minister Tama Potaka, this marks the biggest potential change in conservation policy in over 30 years. The proposal suggests charging $20 for New Zealanders and $30 for foreigners to visit Cathedral Cove, Tongariro Alpine Crossing, Franz Josef Glacier, Milford Sound, and Aoraki Mount Cook National Park.
The fees could generate around $71 million yearly if applied to all visitors, or about half that if restricted to international tourists. The revenue would support the maintenance of these popular spots, many of which are under increasing pressure .
