The Pont de Bir-Hakeim, one of Paris’ most renowned bridges, has been temporarily closed for essential repairs after the city successfully hosted the 2024 Olympics. The influx of tourists flocking to the city during the Games put immense pressure on the bridge, which famously overlooks the Eiffel Tower.

During the marathon event, signs of structural stress emerged as the bridge’s elevated walkway began to wobble. Engineers reported that heavy bolts were seen falling from the bridge’s supports, prompting immediate action to close the landmark for safety reasons.

Jeremy Redler, the conservative mayor of Paris’ 16th arrondissement, acknowledged the anticipated strain due to the Olympic events occurring underneath the bridge. “We knew there would be too many tourists. Luckily, nothing tragic happened,” he said.

The Pont de Bir-Hakeim, which has also served as a backdrop in several notable films, will remain closed as engineers work to restore its structural integrity.

Despite earlier concerns about the city’s capacity to handle the overwhelming tourist influx, the hosting of the Olympics was considered a success. However, the event has sparked renewed discussions about the safety and readiness of France’s infrastructure.
