Starting in 2025, American travelers to Europe will face new entry requirements. The European Union is launching the European Travel Information and Authorization System (ETIAS), a visa waiver that aims to boost border security.

ETIAS differs from traditional visas. It’s a digital authorization requiring a quick online application, and most approvals arrive via email within an hour.

Originally planned for early 2024, ETIAS is now delayed to the first half of 2025. The delay is due to the development of the Entry/Exit System (EES), a system that will replace manual passport stamping with electronic registration.

ETIAS depends on data from the EES to evaluate potential risks. Therefore, ETIAS can’t start until the EES is fully operational. The contractor, EU-LISA, plans to have EES running by November 2024, with ETIAS following soon after.

Once active, ETIAS will be mandatory for Americans visiting any of the member countries. These include Schengen members like France and Italy and the European Free Trade Association countries like Switzerland, future Schengen members like Cyprus, and microstates such as Monaco.

The ETIAS application is simple and affordable, costing around $8 for a three-year approval. While most travelers will get their authorization quickly, it’s wise to apply at least 96 hours before departure to avoid last-minute issues.

This new requirement marks a change for U.S. travelers used to visa-free entry to most of the European region. However, experts believe ETIAS will soon become a routine part of travel, similar to systems in Canada and Australia.
