The world’s first 3D-printed hotel is under construction in Marfa, Texas. El Cosmico, a unique hotel and campground, is expanding its property using a massive 3D printer. The expansion includes 43 new hotel units and 18 residential homes spread across 60 acres .
The project is a collaboration between El Cosmico owner Liz Lambert, 3D printing company ICON, and architects from Bjarke Ingels Group. Lambert expressed excitement about the design possibilities, using technology that allows for more creative architectural features that traditional construction would not make feasible.
The 3D printer Vulcan, designed by ICON, stands 15.5 feet tall and uses a special cement-based material called Lavacrete. This “ink” mixture is adjusted based on weather conditions to ensure printability. According to ICON CEO Jason Ballard, this makes the building process both innovative and cost-effective.
The first two structures being printed are a single-room hotel unit and a three-bedroom residence. The curvy, beige walls are being formed layer by layer, with Vulcan’s robotic arm guiding the process.
However, not everyone sees 3D-printed construction as entirely positive. Experts like Milad Bazli warn that it could reduce skilled labor opportunities, especially in remote areas.
El Cosmico’s expansion is expected to be completed by 2026, with nightly rates ranging from $200 to $450.
