A major piece of Roman history has been discovered beneath an office building in London. Archaeologists unearthed a section of the city’s first basilica , a 2,000-year-old public building used for political, economic, and administrative matters. The structure, built around 80 AD, sheds light on Londinium’s early days as the Roman capital of Britain.
The site was uncovered at 85 Gracechurch Street, where construction plans led to excavation. Digging through a basement, researchers found limestone walls that once formed a two-and-a-half-story structure. The basilica was part of a larger forum, a bustling social and commercial hub where people handled legal matters and business transactions.

Aside from uncovering the ruins, archaeologists also discovered artifacts, including a stamped roof tile, further connecting the site to ancient Roman rule.
The basilica was only in use for about 20 years before being replaced by a larger forum, reflecting the city’s rapid growth. The remains, now set for full excavation, will be integrated into the new office development, allowing public access to this historic site.
