Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International (IGI) Airport has achieved a historic milestone as the first in India to connect with 150 global destinations. This achievement was celebrated with the launch of Thai AirAsia X’s direct flights between Delhi and Bangkok-Don Mueang (DMK) on Sunday. The Airbus A330 service will initially operate twice a week, with plans to expand to four weekly flights by mid-January 2025.
IGI Airport continues to play a dominant role in India’s aviation sector. It serves as the starting point for 56% of the country’s weekly long-haul flights and handles 42% of all international long-haul passengers departing from India. Domestically, over 4 million passengers travel through the airport every year, enjoying connections to numerous global cities.
In recent years, Delhi Airport has expanded its reach by adding over 20 international destinations, including Calgary, Montreal, Phnom Penh, Washington D.C., and Tokyo. This growth has been bolstered by Indian airlines’ introducing wide-body aircraft, cementing Delhi’s position as a “super-connector” hub.
The airport’s success is supported by its world-class infrastructure and passenger-friendly services. From efficient immigration counters to luxurious lounges, IGI Airport offers a seamless travel experience. Videh Kumar Jaipuriar, CEO of Delhi International Airport Limited (DIAL), expressed pride in this achievement, calling it a commitment to enhancing global connectivity.
As Indian carriers continue to grow, Delhi Airport’s extensive network now spans Asia, Europe, North America, and beyond. Travelers can easily fly to major cities like London, New York, Paris, Dubai, and Singapore, as well as regional hubs such as Varanasi and Goa.
