The iconic dome of Hagia Sophia, renowned for its grandeur and intricate mosaics, is set to be dismantled as part of an extensive restoration project. Turkish officials and an international committee under UNESCO are overseeing this critical phase, ensuring the preservation of the monument’s historical authenticity while addressing significant structural concerns.

Dismantling the dome, a centerpiece of Emperor Justinian’s 6th-century vision, will begin in March or April 2025. The Turkish Ministry of Culture and Tourism, in collaboration with Greek and international experts, plans to use Ottoman-era materials and techniques to reconstruct the dome and stabilize its structure. Decades of maintenance, including semi-dome repairs, were deemed insufficient as recent assessments revealed risks of collapse, especially during earthquakes.

The urgency for restoration gained momentum last year after fragments of the dome fell into the interior, raising alarms about its condition. Advanced digital scans of Hagia Sophia have been conducted to ensure accuracy during the reconstruction. The digital model, similar to the one used for Notre Dame, allows experts to analyze cracks and create a faithful replica of the original structure, safeguarding this UNESCO World Heritage Site for future generations.

The Hagia Sophia’s transformation into a mosque in 2020 further complicated the preservation effort. While some experts criticized the decision, others highlighted its global importance as both a cultural and religious landmark. Despite these challenges, the restoration team remains committed to maintaining the historical and architectural essence of the site.

The upcoming reconstruction continues a legacy of preserving the Hagia Sophia’s architectural brilliance, ensuring its longevity amid Istanbul’s shifting history.
