Italy is now recognized as the country with the most UNESCO World Heritage sites.

Via Appia Regina Viarum is the latest site to be added to the World Heritage List , becoming the country’s 60th site. The recognition took place during the 46th session of the World Heritage Committee in New Delhi.

Also known as the Appian Way and often referred to as the “Queen of Long-Distance Roads,” Via Appia is around 800 kilometers long. It is the oldest and most important great road built by ancient Romans, originally conceived as a strategic road for military conquest.

Considered a feat of Roman engineering, Via Appia has also contributed to Italy’s tourism. Parts of the road are well-preserved and serve as an attraction. Visitors can walk or bike along sections of the ancient road, exploring ruins, catacombs, and other historical sites along the way.

In addition to Via Appia, other sites within Europe that were recently listed as World Heritage sites include Dacia in Romania, the Schwerin Residence Ensemble in Germany, and The Flow Country in Scotland, among others.

Italy is a must-visit destination whether you’re into history, culture, art, or food. If you’re planning an Italian getaway, ensure a hassle-free trip by preparing your travel requirements in advance. While in Italy, consider exploring Tuscany on a road trip or learning more about art with an art-inspired itinerary .
