A new high-speed train service between Paris and Berlin began operating on December 16, offering a faster and more sustainable way to travel between the two capitals. Operated by the Alleo partnership of SNCF Voyageurs and DB, the daily service promises an eight-hour journey aboard Siemens Mobility’s DB Class 407 Velaro D trainsets.

The train connects Paris Est to Berlin Hbf, with stops in Strasbourg, Karlsruhe, Frankfurt Süd, and Berlin-Spandau. It utilizes high-speed rail lines from Paris to Strasbourg and Frankfurt to Berlin. Ticket prices start at €59.99 for standard class and €69.99 for first class, making it an attractive option for leisure and business travelers alike.

This eco-friendly service highlights the environmental advantages of rail travel. A train journey produces just 2 kg of CO2 per passenger, compared to the 200 kg emitted by a typical flight between the cities. With increasing demand for greener travel options, this new route is well-positioned to attract environmentally conscious travelers.

Initial sales have exceeded expectations, with an 80% occupancy rate reported for the first train departing from Paris. Around 75% of bookings are for the full route between the two capitals. This strong start has raised the possibility of adding more trains if demand continues to grow.

At the inauguration, SNCF CEO Jean-Pierre Farandou expressed optimism about the service’s success. DB CEO Richard Lutz emphasized the significance of German-French collaboration in creating a more connected Europe. “This is another highlight in international long-distance transport,” he said, adding that rail travel across Europe is experiencing a boom due to attractive offers like this.

German Transport Minister Dr. Volker Wissing celebrated the train as a symbol of unity and cooperation. He noted its potential to encourage cross-border travel, whether by day or night. This daytime high-speed train complements the existing Paris-Berlin night train launched in December 2023, further enhancing connectivity between the two iconic cities.

Travelers embarking on a scenic road trip in France may find rail services like this a convenient way to complement their adventures.

An International Driving Permit (IDP) is also essential for those planning to explore by car, ensuring a smooth and hassle-free experience.

Both France and Germany offer breathtaking landscapes, cultural landmarks, and culinary delights that are best enjoyed with the flexibility of combining rail and road travel.
