It’s easier than ever to hike to the tallest waterfall in Great Smoky Mountains National Park. The Ramsey Cascades Trail has reopened after a three-year restoration , according to the National Park Service (NPS).

This 8-mile round trip hike takes visitors through a hardwood forest and climbs over 2,000 feet in elevation to the 105-foot-tall Ramsey Cascades. The trail was revamped using natural materials and hand tools to preserve its original design, the NPS noted.
Improvements include two new footlog bridges, updated decking and handrails, 151 trail drains, and over 600 new steps for safety and erosion control. Crews also regraded 2.5 miles of the trail, removed roots and rocks, and pruned overgrown vegetation.
The restoration project started in 2022 and required weekday closures earlier this year. It was funded by the Friends of the Smokies Trails Forever Endowment. Dana Soehn, president of Friends of the Smokies, shared that the project goes beyond creating a sustainable trail—it invites future generations to enjoy the Ramsey Prong.
Next year, the NPS plans to restore another iconic trail in the park: the Bull Head Trail to Mount Le Conte.
