Sigiriya is a small village in Sri Lanka’s “Cultural Triangle.” It’s about a three-hour road trip from Colombo’s Bandaranaike International Airport (CMB). Travelers planning to explore the area by car should consider securing an international driver’s permit for a smooth experience.
The highlight of Sigiriya is the Sigiriya Rock Fortress, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The ancient landmark, rising 1,200 feet, was once a royal capital in the 5th century. Travelers can climb its 1,300 steps to reach the palace ruins at the summit.
Beyond the fortress, Sigiriya offers cultural and natural attractions. The Sigiriya Museum provides insights into the site’s history, while the Sigiriya Craft Village showcases handmade batiks and textiles. A road trip in Sri Lanka wouldn’t be complete without a visit to Minneriya National Park, home to “The Gathering,” an annual event where hundreds of Asian elephants congregate.
Luxury accommodations in the area include Jetwing Vil Uyana, operated by andBeyond. The eco-luxury retreat offers 36 rooms set in different habitats, from forest to paddy fields. Roo Mansala, a boutique stay with six rooms, provides stunning views of Sigiriya Rock and Pidurangala Rock.
Other destinations that made Booking.com’s top five include Cazorla, Spain; Urubici, Brazil; Taupo, New Zealand; and St. Augustine, Florida.
