Check if you need an IDP Now

Starting May 7, 2025, U.S. travelers 18 and older will need a Real ID or an approved alternative to board domestic flights. Without one, the TSA will deny entry at security checkpoints. But if you already have a passport, do you still need a Real ID?

A Real ID is a federally standardized driver’s license or identification card introduced in response to security recommendations from the 9/11 Commission. The goal is to ensure all state-issued IDs meet the same security standards. If you obtained a new license after 2005, you may already have one. Real IDs are issued in all 50 states, Washington, D.C., Puerto Rico, and U.S. territories.

Having a Real ID is especially helpful for travelers who may already be securing an international driver’s permit or reviewing a United States driving guide before a trip.

To check if your license is Real ID-compliant, look for a star in the top portion of the card. California residents will see a bear with a star cutout instead. Some states, like Michigan, Minnesota, New York, Vermont, and Washington, issue Enhanced Driver’s Licenses (EDLs), which serve as an acceptable alternative. EDLs are marked with a U.S. flag and the word “Enhanced.”

If you don’t have a Real ID, a passport or passport card will still allow you to travel. According to the Department of Homeland Security, passports are valid alternatives for domestic air travel.

To get a Real ID, visit your state’s DMV and bring documents proving your full legal name, date of birth, Social Security number, two proofs of residency, and lawful status. Some states may have additional requirements, so check your local DMV’s website before heading in.

The United States remains a top travel destination, offering everything from bustling cities to breathtaking national parks. Whether you’re visiting for work or leisure, understanding travel requirements ensures a seamless experience.
